Former West Virginia safety Tykee Smith will transfer to the University of Georgia, Smith announced on Twitter Sunday night.

Smith will be reunited with his former position coach at WVU, Jahmile Addae, who also joined the Bulldogs this offseason. Addae was WVU’s defensive backs coach in 2019 and 2020 and also served as co-defensive coordinator last season. He was hired as UGA’s defensive backs coach in January.

Smith entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal one day after WVU began its spring practices last month. WVU coach Neal Brown called Smith’s transfer a “mutual separation”.

Smith, a junior, is coming off of a break-out 2020 season in which he was named an AP Third Team All-American and an All-Big 12 honorable mention. He finished fourth on the Mountaineers with 61 total tackles with eight tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups. Smith did not play in the Mountaineers’ bowl game against Army on New Year’s Eve.
