West Virginia football safety Tykee Smith is entering his name into the transfer portal, Smith announced via Twitter Wednesday evening.

Smith, a junior, is coming off of a break-out 2020 season in which he was named an AP Third Team All-AmericanĀ and anĀ All-Big 12 honorable mention. He finished fourth on the Mountaineers with 61 total tackles with eight tackles for loss, two interceptions and five pass breakups. Smith did not play in the Mountaineers’ bowl game against Army on New Year’s Eve.

Smith is WVU’s second starting defensive back to enter into the transfer portal this offseason, joining starting corner Dreshun Miller. Former WVU defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae also left this offseason to join the coaching staff at Georgia.

The only other player listed at spear on WVU’s Spring roster is former walk-on Naim Muhammad. Following the team’s first Spring practice on Wednesday, WVU coach Neal Brown said they are focusing on cross-training players at multiple positions, including safeties.
