Report: West Virginia to Face SMU in First Round of Fort Myers Tip-Off

West Virginia is expected to face SMU in the first round of Fort Myers Tip-Off, sources told Jon Rothstein. Virginia and Wisconsin are the other teams in the field and will matchup as well. The event will take place in Fort Myers, Fl. from Nov. 20-22, 2023.

This will be the first matchup between WVU and SMU ever.

“The four teams taking part in the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off are historically strong programs that reinforce the premier status of this event in the eyes of the college basketball community,” said Mark Starsiak, tournament director and vice president at Intersport. “Between national championship contenders, recent Final Four participants, coaching veterans and passionate fan bases, these teams will create a very special environment. We can’t wait to host these programs in Lee County and Southwest Florida.”

West Virginia will match up with either Virginia or Wisconsin in the second round depending on the outcomes of each game. WVU has most recently played Virginia in 2017 and Wisconsin in 2014.

SMU is heading into year two with head coach Rob Lanier. The Mustangs went 10-22 last season but have retooled their roster with a transfer portal class including former Oklahoma State forward Tyreek Smith.
