“We are excited to have Garrett joining our staff here at West Virginia. As a former player and graduate assistant for me at Drake, he has a tremendous understanding of how we do things and will fit in great with our staff,” DeVries said.
Sturtz played under DeVries from 2018-23 at Drake, averaging 8.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 167 games. After graduating, Sturtz served as a GA at Drake. Sturtz managed video and team operations, as well as offseason player development.
Sturtz takes over for Trent Michaels, who served as the director of basketball operations under Bob Huggins and Josh Eilert. Michaels spent a few months with DeVries and his staff as well.
Sturtz joins a new West Virginia staff that consists of DeVries (HC), Chester Frazier (AHC), Kory Barnett (assistant), Tom Ostrom (assistant), Cavel Witter (assistant), Nick Norton (assistant), Nelson Hernandez (director of player personnel/recruiting) and Jalen Cannady (video coordinator).
