WVU QB Nicco Marchiol Expected to Start at Arizona
As expected all week, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Nicco Marchiol will likely start for WVU on Saturday night in Arizona. In an ironic twist, Marchiol will now get the start back in his home state.
Marchiol replaced Garrett Greene in the second half of West Virginia’s 45-18 loss to Kansas State on Saturday night. Greene did not return to the game with what Brown said he believed was a head injury.
Marchiol completed 6-of-13 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown while under center. He also had nine failed rushing attempts, resulting in zero yards on the ground.
The 6-foot, 223 pound redshirt sophomore was a 2022 four-star recruit out of Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz.
Marchiol has 388 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions overall throughout his career as a Mountaineer. To this point, Marchiol’s best moments at WVU are leading the Mountaineers to a 2023 Backyard Brawl win after Greene left only a few plays into that game with an injury and then winning his first career college start against Texas Tech.
West Virginia will enter the game at 3-4 (2-2, Big 12) while Arizona also sits at 3-4 (1-3, Big 12).
On Sunday, DraftKings set Arizona as a slim favorite in their opening line for the first meeting between the schools as Big 12 foes. The line has since moved more towards Arizona as a 5.5-point favorite on most sports books.
WVU-Arizona at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Ariz., will be televised on FS1 at 7 pm ET.
For a related story, the West Virginia Mountaineers are staying focused and remain confident despite losing record.
