Fear not WVU fans, Coal Rush gear is available in time for the debut of West Virginia’s new uniform after all! A week after WVU’s Deputy Athletics Director of External Affairs told fans the Coal Rush jerseys would not arrive in time for the Iowa State game, the prayers of Mountaineer Nation have been answered.

On Thursday, the WVU Athletic Department announced Coal Rush replica jerseys are in stock at the WVU Team Shop on Patterson Drive in Morgantown.

Fans in the area can now stop by and grab a jersey (or other Coal Rush merchandise) to wear at the game on Saturday night when the Mountaineers host the No. 11 ranked Iowa State Cyclones.

As far as what fans think of the Coal Rush uniform, they were initially revealed in May to a polarizing reaction. Some fans prefer their Mountaineers to simply stick to the school’s colors of gold and blue. Despite the distain of some, this is not the first time WVU fans will watch a West Virginia team wear black.

The WVU men’s basketball team wore black jerseys during the 2023 Brawl, famously bringing back the black jerseys for the first time in over a decade. The original black jerseys debuted in 2010, a special season for the Mountaineer basketball. The women’s team also wore black jerseys this past season.

WVU director of athletics Wren Baker has openly discussed the idea of a black uniform for the football team in the past, citing his desire to listen to the players and dealing with backlash at this prior stop in North Texas when he incorporated a non green look for the “Mean Green.”

While the fans are split, the players seem to love the new look. But no matter how anyone may feel about the black uniforms, it’s safe to say WVU fans all just want the team to win as much as possible.

The Mountaineers 3-2 (2-0, Big 12) and Cyclones 5-0 (2-0, Big 12) are set to kickoff at 8 pm ET on Oct. 12. WVU is considered a slight underdog going into the game.

The Saturday night atmosphere will also serve as the backdrop to Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht’s father Anthony being honored. Former Mountaineer Anthony Becht was unable to attend his induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame and will be honored when his son is in town.

Both WVU and Iowa State are among five remaining undefeated teams in the Big 12 standings. Iowa State is coming off a 43-21 win over Baylor.
