Gambler’s Corner: Week Nine

Published

on

We’re starting to feel really good about our picks lately. Last week’s results brought our overall record to 7-8 after our third straight week of going 2-1. It’s time to finally claim an overall winning record!

Last Week’s results:

  • Michigan State (-6.5) over Indiana – Loss
  • Tennessee at Alabama (over 50.5) – Win
  • Penn State (-9.5) over Michigan – Win

Hot Picks of Week Nine

Notre Dame (-7.5) against North Carolina State

I’m usually cautious of an overly-hyped Notre Dame team, but that’s not the case this season for the No. 9 Fighting Irish. And it’s especially not the case for Notre Dame running back Josh Adams. The Irish have relied heavily on Adams’ 9.2 yards per carry average and the junior back is only 37 yards away from eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark. Adversely, North Carolina State’s strength comes by way of its run defense, allowing just under 100 yards rushing per contest. If this game were to be played in Raleigh instead of under the watchful eyes of “Touchdown Jesus” in South Bend, I’d be inclined to take the Wolfpack, but Notre Dame has been pretty damn good at home.

West Virginia (+7.5) against Oklahoma State

I’ve stayed away from playing any West Virginia game all season long, but the time has finally come. Home underdogs cover the spread more often than not and especially when they are ranked. A lot of hoopla can made about the Mountaineers playing this game at noon rather than under the lights of Milan Puskar Stadium, but West Virginia hasn’t lost a noon kick-off game since last season against the Cowboys in Stillwater.

Penn State (+6.5) at Ohio State

As an avid West Virginia fan, it’s difficult to want either of these teams to win. But not only will the Nittany Lions cover the 6.5 points, they’ll walk into Columbus and hand the Buckeyes its second loss on the season. Ohio State’s only quality opponent this season has been Oklahoma and the Sooners dismantled the Buckeyes for a 31-16 win.
