Several WVU basketball players ended their career Sunday with an 89-82 win over Oklahoma in the College Basketball Crown championship game.

Among those seniors were guard Honor Huff and forward Brenen Lorient, who were the team’s top two leading scorers this year. The two reflected on the season as well as the championship victory in the postgame press conference.

Sunday’s game presented challenges, as a 15-point first-half lead slipped away and the Mountaineers trailed at halftime. The team overcame that adversity for the overtime victory, similar to how the team dealt with different challenges throughout the season, according to Lorient.

Lorient said he is the most proud of the team’s ability to stay together no matter what this year.

“The thing I’ll be proud of was that regardless of what was said around our team, concerning our team, we just always showed up. We always loved each other and we fought to the very end,” Lorient said.

Huff also highlighted the team’s togetherness this season, crediting head coach Ross Hodge for the way he built the staff and the team as a whole.

“The camaraderie we have is some of the best I’ve ever been around. And the way coach Hodge structured this group from bottom to top, not just the players, from the coaching staff, the managers, who gets to be in this circle, it’s just great people,” Huff said.

While it was a hard-fought game, Huff believed WVU had the team to overcome the challenges given, and he was proven correct.

“It was a battle and we knew it was going to be, but I think we have the resilience and the group to withstand um the storms that we had to withstand and get a win,” Huff added.

WVU basketball finished the season with a total record of 21-14 and a Big 12 record of 9-9.
