The WVU basketball team’s hopes of a Big 12 championship run were trounced Wednesday night in a 68-48 loss to BYU in the Big 12 Tournament. The Mountaineers committed a season-high 22 turnovers on the game, previously set against Wake Forest on Dec. 6.

Senior guard Honor Huff heated up from three for WVU to start. He started 2-2 from three-point range to start the game as WVU went up 8-5 in the first five minutes.

Senior forward Brenen Lorient made a mid-range shot to cap off a 7-0 run for WVU and make it a 10-5 lead.

The scoring came to a halt for WVU for the next seven minutes, as BYU went on a 12-1 run for a 17-11 lead. WVU only managed to tally a field goal before Lorient punched in a transition dunk.

BYU took a commanding 28-17 lead with just 2:44 remaining before WVU responded with a 6-0 run, which included an and-one three by Huff. BYU added three more points before the half to take a 31-23 lead to the locker room.

Freshman forward AJ Dybantsa helped propel the Cougars to their halftime lead with 17 first-half points.

Senior guard Treysen Eaglestaff started scoring in the second half with a mid-range jumper. The teams kept trading blows, as senior guard Jasper Floyd made an inside shot to make it a three-point game with 9:36 remaining.

BYU answered with a 12-2 run lasting over three minutes for a 55-42 lead, the team’s largest advantage of the game. The scoring surge forced a WVU timeout.

The BYU lead grew to 17 points with just 2:39 to go. Floyd broke a six-minute field goal drought with a layup that BYU was called for goaltending on.

BYU held the ball consistently to end the game and closed it out with a game-high lead of 20 points.

WVU basketball finishes the season at 18-14 with a 9-10 Big 12 record.
