After trailing through seven matches, West Virginia used a run of three straight heavyweight victories to propel the No.22 ranked WVU wrestling team to a 22-13 win over No. 20 Oklahoma on Friday night inside McCasland Field House.

The Sooners’ No. 9 ranked Gaven Sax’s 8-3 decision win over Brody Conley at 174 pounds gave Oklahoma a 13-12 lead. West Virginia then received three consecutive triumphs from Dennis Robin, Ian Bush and Michael Wolfgram to close the meet and give the Mountaineers their first victory over Oklahoma since 2018.

Robin, ranked No. 23 at 184 pounds, defeated No. 21 DJ Parker 11-5 to put the Mountaineers in front. Bush earned a 14-5 major decision over Bradley Hill at 197 to increase West Virginia’s lead to 19-13.

Needing to avoid being pinned to seal the win, Wolfgram put the exclamation point on the dual by defeating Juan Mora 8-5 with a takedown in the sudden victory overtime period.

The Mountaineers (8-3, 2-2) snapped a two-match losing skid and improved to 7-0 away from the WVU Coliseum, while defeating Oklahoma for just the third time since the matchup series began in 1986.

Jett Strickenberger began the match with his third straight victory over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 23 Antonio Lorenzo 11-4 at 125 pounds. The Sooners followed with three straight victories to jump ahead 10-4.

Sasha Gavronsky beat Landyn Sommer 10-4 at 157 before No. 3 Peyton Hall scored a 17-2 technical fall win over No. 30 Tate Picklo at 165.

The win improved Hall’s record to 21-0 this season and moved the two-time All-American into second place on the program’s all-time wins list with 121. Hall needs just seven more wins to tie Greg Jones (128) for the top mark.

West Virginia will visit No. 3 Oklahoma State for another key Big 12 contest in its next match on Sunday afternoon.
