It’s no secret the WVU offense will only go as far as Garrett Greene takes it each week. Every opposing coach knows that, and Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy is no different.

Gundy went into detail about what he expects from Greene on Saturday during his weekly press conference on Monday.

“You got to stop their quarterback. Heโ€™s a good runner. Very similar to what we saw last week. Coach Brown has done a good job with them. Theyโ€™ve been in their games,” said Gundy. “Every game theyโ€™ve played theyโ€™ve been very competitive in it. Penn State took them over later, but not really. It was a very competitive game. Same coordinators, same defensive structure. Nealโ€™s offense is the same as what itโ€™s been. This quarterback thatโ€™s there has been there for I donโ€™t know how many years. I think he played against (Mason) Rudolph. Itโ€™s been forever. Heโ€™s still there.”

Gundy continued, pointing to Greene’s experience as advantage for the Mountaineers at this point in his career. “Experience has helped him. And Iโ€™m guessing the relationship he has with his play-callers and position coach, theyโ€™re further along now just from experience. Heโ€™s been good at rushing the ball and they do a good job with that. We have to control the quarterback and keep him from flushing out and running around.”

In reality, what Gundy said is part true and part coach speak. Greene has thrown for 902 yards and scored nine total touchdowns, but has also already matched the number of interceptions he threw all off 2023 already in 2024.

At the same time Gundy was talking about West Virginia and Greene, WVU head coach Neal Brown was discussing the Cowboys.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve dealt with adversity before. Theyโ€™ve come back. We fully expect to get their best,โ€ said Brown, who also admitted heโ€™d probably rather OSU be riding high than in desperation mode with an 0-2 conference record.

What Does Neal Brown Expect From Oklahoma State?

Brown pointed to Oklahoma Stateโ€™s schedule being a factor in their rough start to conference play. The Cowboysโ€™ losses have been to preseason favorite Utah and perennial contender Kansas State, making it possible they will still beat weaker competition and dig themselves out similar to what happened last season.

Brown even called OSU running back Ollie Gordon a โ€œspecialโ€ player and said he fully expects him to be at his best despite failing to reach 100 yards in a game yet this season.

โ€œHeโ€™s going to have breakout games. I just hope itโ€™s not against us.โ€

West Virginia 2-2 (1-0, Big 12) and Oklahoma State 3-2 (0-2, Big 12) will kickoff at 4 pm ET and 3 pm local time in Stillwater. The game will air nationally on ESPN2.

For a related story, WVU head coach Neal Brown explained why he canโ€™t put Garrett Greene in a hurry-up offense all of the time.
