WVU Football Selects Game to Debut Coal Rush Uniform
Even though they will have to wait two weeks, WVU fans now know when they will see the Mountaineers debut their new Coal Rush uniform. On Monday, West Virginia referred to the upcoming matchup with Iowa State as the Coal Rush game on social media.
WVU posted about a Coal Rush themed image after the Big 12 revealed the kickoff time and network for the game. On Oct. 12, West Virginia will host the Iowa State Cyclones at 8 pm ET. The game will be nationally televised on Fox.

The Saturday night atmosphere will also serve as the backdrop to Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht’s father Anthony being honored. Former Mountaineer Anthony Becht was unable to attend his induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame and will be honored when his son is in town.
As far as the Coal Rush uniforms, they were initially revealed in May to a polarizing reaction. Some fans prefer their Mountaineers to simply stick to the school’s colors of gold and blue. Despite the distain of some, this is not the first time WVU fans will watch a West Virginia team wear black.
New ‘Coal Rush’ Black Uniform Sparks Big Reaction Among WVU Fans
The WVU men’s basketball team wore black jerseys during the 2023 Brawl, famously bringing back the black jerseys for the first time in over a decade. The original black jerseys debuted in 2010, a special season for the Mountaineer basketball. The women’s team also wore black jerseys this past season.
WVU director of athletics Wren Baker has openly discussed the idea of a black uniform for the football team in the past, citing his desire to listen to the players and dealing with backlash at this prior stop in North Texas when he incorporated a non green look for the “Mean Green.”
But no matter how anyone may feel about the black uniforms, it’s safe to say WVU fans all just want the team to win as much as possible.
