Poll: What Grade Would You Give WVU Football in Terms of Adding Transfer Players?

Neal Brown leading WVU football team

The work for the WVU football program is far from finished and the roster isn’t close to being set, but with summer about a month away, it’s time to asses how the Mountaineers have done in terms of adding transfer players.

West Virginia has been steadily gaining players, at least commitment wise, since the end of spring ball, something that was part of the plan head coach Neal Brown was open about throughout his offseason media sessions. This came after securing transfers, including a couple big ones like Devin Carter and Kole Taylor, prior to the spring session even beginning too.

And while WVU has also experienced losing some players too, most notably Tony Mathis’ surprising decision to leave instead of continuing on as the leader of a loaded group of running backs, they have also been able to find players at key positions interested in coming to Morgantown.

But did WVU do enough? Did they find the right pieces needed to have a better season in 2023 than the one fans want to forget from 2022? What grade would you give West Virginia so far?

All that matters is if this work leads to better results on the field, and even though some of the additions are about more than this coming season, it’s unlikely Brown and his staff will be back in 2024 if they get the Mountaineers back climbing again very soon.

Note: This does not include transfer players who have committed but have not yet actually signed.

At the end of the day, WVU only picked up two bonafied P5 starters. Considering just about every position (outside of QB, RB & OL) was in need of starters, this is actually a pathetic haul. Throw in the now-poor high school recruiting, and the inability to recruit proven P5 assistant coaches, then this off-season has been a disaster. Neal Brown has ruined the WVU football brand.
