Top QB Prospect Announces Commitment to Big 12 School on Pat McAfee Show

Pat McAfee may support the Mountaineers, but he also hosts one of the most popular national sports talk shows in the country. So on Tuesday, McAfee had to promote another Big 12 program and their big recruiting win.

McAfee welcomed one of the top quarterback recruits on his show to reveal his college choice live on ESPN.

Five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons announced his commitment decision to BYU. The Cougars beat out the likes of Ole Miss, Oregon, USC and upwards of 40 other offers for the California prospect.

“BYU believed in me early,” explained Lyons as what led to the Cougars winning his services.

While Lyons is currently a 2026 class player, he is college carer could be delayed until 2027 at the earliest since he plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before arriving on campus in Provo.

247 Sports ranks Lyons as the No. 1 player in California, the No. 5 quarterback nationally and the No. 19 overall player in the country.

Lyons was named California Gatorade Player of the Year for his 2024 season, when he completed 68% of his passes for 3,011 yards and 46 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions. He also added 585 yards on the ground and scored 14 touchdowns, leading Folsom High School to a 12-1 record and a berth in the CIF Division I-AA North Regional Championship Game.

So far in his high school career with two seasons as a starter, Lyons has 6,589 passing yards, 84 touchdowns through the air, 14 interceptions and 1,538 rushing yards with 38 more scores. He’s even spent time as a punter.

As a dual-sport athlete, Lyons averages 2.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game for the Folsom basketball team.
