WVU Baseball celebrates after win

Winning an NCAA Regional is a big accomplishment in and of itself, but winning the national championship is a completely different level of success.  While the WVU baseball program will be able to celebrate the 2024 season no matter what happens the rest of the way, is it actually possible the Mountaineers could go all the way?

They aren’t the favorites, but most major sportsbooks have West Virginia’s odds to win the College World Series set around 40/1, per SportsBetting.ag. For clarity, DraftKings labels WVU’s odds at +6500. To put those odds into perspective, Tennessee is considered the favorite at 3/1.

In addition to the odds for winning the title, WVU sits at +195 to even win their Super Regional series against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are the home favorite in the matchup at -250.

But no matter what happens, WVU fans should enjoy this historic ride of baseball into June.

June doesn’t usually mean an opportunity for WVU fans to watch a Mountaineer team. Football and basketball are deep into their off-seasons and the other WVU teams are out of action as well. The summer months are usually just about following professional teams and gearing up for the fall. But that’s not the case this year.

This year, the WVU baseball team is still playing, winning the program’s first NCAA Regional last weekend. And now Randy Mazey’s Mountaineers will continue on and take part in Super Regional play this coming weekend in North Carolina.

On Tuesday, the schedule for WVU’s weekend series with the Tar Heels was announced. West Virginia (36-22) will take on No. 4 North Carolina (45-14) through the weekend. First pitch for game 1 will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, game 2 will then be at 8 p.m. on Saturday and game 3 is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. All games on ESPN2. Monday is designated as a makeup day if any of the necessary games get rained out.

Schedule Set for WVU Baseball in Super Regional Against North Carolina

WVU Baseball has existed since 1892; the NCAA Baseball tournament since 1947. On Sunday, the Mountaineers advanced through the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, defeating the Grand Canyon Antelopes 10-6 to move on to the Super Regional round.

For historical context, despite some other major success across all sports and getting this far countless times, West Virginia Athletics has only WON 20 total NCAA national championships throughout the entire history of the athletic department (19 in rifle combined for both men’s and women’s, 1 in boxing). In addition to the titles won, WVU also CLAIMS eight more national titles (1 in men’s basketball – 1942, 4 more in rifle and 1 in cricket). While some believe the football program should claim the 1922 season as a national championship, the program does not currently publicly recognize it as one.

The WVU Baseball team winning a national championship on the field would be a gigantic deal for the school and state, to say the least. It would also ensure Mazey’s place as a beloved figure in West Virginia forever.

The ‘04 Sox adopted the Idiots nickname as a way of saying who cares about the weight of history. None of the players were alive in 1892 or 1947. Have fun, win the game that day. We’ll be behind them all the way!
