What’s One Realistic Bowl Game Possibility for WVU Football?
Now one win away from clinching bowl eligibility, the 2026 WVU football teams appears headed towards a postseason game. And even if simply making a bowl game is below the ultimate goal for West Virginia, it would mark Rich Rodriguez’s first bowl game as the leader of the Mountaineers in 20 years.
But where exactly could WVU be headed assuming they in at least one more game?
ESPN, the national outlet who has projected the Mountaineers as a bowl team throughout the highs and lows of the season, currently has West Virginia in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. One ESPN writer has WVU facing UConn in an old Big East throwback matchup and the other Washington out of the Big Ten as the opponent.
The Independence Bowl will take place on Friday, Dec. 18 from Shreveport, Louisiana and kickoff at night at 8:30 pm ET. ESPN is set to air the game nationally.

Currently enjoying a bye week, West Virginia (5-3, 2-3 – Big 12) will be back in action on Nov. 7 in Week 10 at Texas Tech (6-1, 3-1 – Big 12).
Historically, reaching a bowl game would be the 42nd all-time for West Virginia. The Mountaineers own a bowl record of 17-23. Rodriguez was 2-3 in bowl games during his first tenure at WVU, granted his two wins came in his last two opportunities, one being a Sugar Bowl win to cap off the 2005 season.
