West Virginia’s opponent for its season opener will be South Dakota State, the University confirmed Sunday eveneing.

WVU will play against South Dakota State at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25 in the first round of the Crossover Classic in South Dakota. It was reported over the weekend that WVU and SDSU would play in the first round, but the University’s announcement Sunday confirms it. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 2.

SDSU finished 22-10 last season, 13-3 in the Summit League. They lost to Purdue Fort Wayne in the first round of the conference tournament.

The Jackrabbits are the latest in what has been a revolving door of opponents scheduled for WVU’s season opener. The Mountaineers were originally scheduled to start the season against Texas A&M. After the Aggies withdrew from the event, however, the Mountaineers were scheduled to face Nothern Iowa in the first round.

The newest Crossover Classic bracket has WVU playing against SDSU on the 25th and either Utah State or Wichita State on the 26th. On the 27th, WVU could play any one of Memphis, Saint Mary’s, Northern Iowa or Western Kentucky.

WVU’s home opener has also recently changed. Originally scheduled to be Youngstown State on Dec. 2, a pause to the Penguins’ program due to COVID-19 now makes Robert Morris on Dec. 9 as WVU’s first scheduled home game.
