MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – As frustrated as ever, WVU defensive coordinator Zac Alley made sure to send a message to his defense as they try to turn their play around.

Coming off the unit’s two worst performances of the season, allowing 609 yards to Oklahoma State and 577 to Iowa State, Alley is well aware where his group ranks nationally.

When asked if it will be difficult to dial back his schemes, many of which are often labeled “exotic,” Alley offered a strong response full of a cold hard truth for his players.

“Well, I don’t think it’ll be difficult this week. I’m pretty sure we’re the worst f***ing defense in college football,” said Alley, taking accountability and also showing a willingness to adjust and adapt due to the circumstances.

Alley then mentioned the abundance of missed tackles and a lack of execution as to why Iowa State, and Aiden Flora in particular – he rushed for 202 yards and accounted for five total touchdowns, as the main reasons why his defense struggled so much against the Cyclones, who canceled out the strong performance from Mike Hawkins, Cam Cook and West Virginia’s offense by scoring 45 points to beat the Mountaineers 45-42.

But for Alley, WVU doesn’t have a lack of talent issue. While 2025 can be chalked up to a lack of talent depth, Alley feels he has plenty of talent to work with this season. However, the trick is that talent needs to execute. And Alley points to a failure to execute as a big factor in games snowballing away from the defense.

“I think we are talented enough to be a lot better than we are.” Even the communication, once called out as something that needed fixed for the defense, has been fixed, although doesn’t matter without proper execution.

The numbers don’t lie though, and they aren’t friendly for Alley.

WVU’s defense doesn’t rank dead last, but close to it in significant categories.

  • West Virginia has allowed 456.6 yards per game, the sixth worst in terms of total yards in the FBS and the second worst among Power Four schools.
  • WVU has allowed the sixth most passing yards per game at 288.2.
  • Once a strength for the defense, WVU has even allowed the 31st most rushing yards per game at 168.4
  • And points wise, WVU has allowed the 29th most in the country at 28.8.

Alley remains confident in himself, referencing the success he’s experienced throughout his entire career, although acknowledging how humbling 2026 has been so far.
