Nicco Marchiol has been at WVU for three years, but he’s preparing for 2025 to be his biggest season yet as a Mountaineer. Expecting to win the starting job, Marchiol is busy working on his game in preparation for fall camp.

Marchiol even showed off some of his progress by posting throwing videos on social media. The videos show Marchiol working with his personal coach and dropping back before firing the ball away.

Marchiol’s quarterback Mike Giovando even posted several videos of Marchiol himself earlier in May.

Based on what took place during spring practice, Marchiol does appear to be ahead in the quarterback battle and is WV Sports Nowโ€™s presumed starter at this point.

Early in spring, Rich Rodriguez was asked for a timeline to name his QB1. His response was offered with levity, but had some truth in it as well.

โ€œWhenโ€™s the first game,โ€ Rodriguez asked jokingly. โ€œDo we have a game time yet?โ€

Then after being told the date, he kept having more fun with his answer.

โ€œOkay, well if the game is at 1, [youโ€™ll know at] 12:59. Weโ€™ll know before thenโ€ฆto determine the starter, someone may separate themselves before the end of the spring, but they may not,โ€ he said.

ESPNโ€™s Pete Thamel even tipped Pat McAfee off on WVUโ€™s quarterback competition and offered his thoughts about Marchiol during a recent appearance on his show.

โ€œI think Nicco Marchiol is a very good player,โ€ mentioned Thamel. However, when McAfee pressed him and asked if he was suggesting Rodriguez told him Marchiol will be the starter, Thamel backpedaled and said thatโ€™s not the case and he was simply going off Marchiol being the incumbent and having stated games at West Virginia in the past.

In 2024, Marchiol completed 37-of-56 pass attempts for 434 yards, throwing five touchdowns with two interceptions and adding 120 yards on the ground. He started and won two games at Arizona and at Cincinnati.

For a related story, Marchiol’s counterpart Jaylen Henderson also posted videos of his offseason work.
