WVU Football QB Garrett Greene in Gold-Blue spring game

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A day that was designed to be a celebration of both the past and the present of WVU football delivered in every possible way. With Pat White and Pat McAfee in the house as coaches, fans in attendance were able to get even more than just the usual first look at this year’s Mountaineers.

The actual game play opened with Garrett Greene leading the Gold team down the field, but that drive did not result in the big score his coach for the day was looking for. From that point on, both teams made some plays and the first quarter ended with Gold up 9-6.

Before the second quarter of action could get underway, the players took part in some drills for the fans. A highlight saw Greece connect with wide receiver and local favorite Preston Fox for a touchdown. At that time, the game then started up again with Blue flipping the scoreboard and leading 15-12.

The attention then turned to Jumbotrons as the WVU football program unveiled a new set of uniforms that offer a unique tribute to the past.

Linebacker Josiah Trotter picked off a pass in the final minutes of the first half for Blue. Trotter’s interception allowed West Virginia fans to see what he can do for the first time. He suffered an injury last spring that caused him to miss all of what would have been his freshman season.

Another Mountaineer was able to impress for the first time, as Duquesne transfer Ayden Garnes picked off Nicco Marchiol and ran it all the way for a touchdown. This put Blue up 24-20.

Going into the fourth quarter, Gold led Blue 26-24. Fox made his presence felt again, this time making a highlight reel worthy catch in the corner of the end zone. The catch solidified the 34-24 win for Gold and gave Fox 19 yards receiving on the day (excluding his production from the drill).

In terms of some statistical performers, Greene threw for 79 yards and ran for 13 on six carries. He did throw a pick. Marchiol completed 10 of 19 for 82 yards with a touchdown and an interception. On the ground, Jahiem White ran for 19 yards and Jaylen Anderson or 16 yards. Traylon Ray caught three balls for 33 yards.
