Chalk another key commitment up for the WVU basketball staff. West Virginia secured a commitment from guard Jonathan Powell, a class of 2024 prospect out of Ohio. Joe Tipton of On3 Sports was first with the news Monday morning.

Powell (6-foot-6, 180 pounds) attends Centerville High School in Dayton, Ohio. The Mountaineers are pulling Powell out of the state after he previously signed with Xavier. He requested to be released from his National Letter of Intent last week.

Powell initially picked Xavier over offers from major programs like Alabama, Cincinnati, Dayton, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and many others.

In his most recent season in 2023, Powell averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He was also efficient, shooting 45% from the field, 38% from three-point range and 67% from the free throw line. Powell was named the Division I Ohio High School Player of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association.

Flipping Powell continues to show the work the new WVU basketball staff is putting in for head coach Darian DeVries. This news comes just a few days after landing their fifth transfer player in Eduardo Andre.

Andre joined  Tucker DeVries (G – Drake), Sencire Harris (G – Illinois), Amani Hansberry (F – Illinois), Toby Okani (F – UIC) and Jevon Small (G – Oklahoma State) as far as transfer addition from this offseason.
