When West Virginia coaches watched his film a second time, they knew they could’t risk losing out on Javon Hammonds Jr.

WVSN spoke with the three-star Edge rusher in the 2024 class about his recruitment and why WVU is among a select group of schools he’s talking to the most.

Hammonds details how the language from the WVU coaches, in particular defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley, changed from his early talks with the program to where they are now. He says the Mountaineers were telling him to be patient and an offer could very well come during his trip back in January, but have since pivoted to making him feel he is a priority.

“They were all telling me to be patient in the being, but as the weeks went on, Coach Lesley gave me a call and said he’s be rewatching my film and none of the guys compare to me so they don’t want to waste any more time,” Hammonds revealed about the chain of events that led to West Virginia sending him an offer on April 7.

Listed at 6’5″ and 230 pounds, Hammonds attends Wayne High School in Dayton, Ohio. He describes himself as a “head hunter” type of player. This is likely why Lesley pulled the trigger on offering him. Strong Edge rushers will an ability to find the quarterback no matter what don’t grown on trees.

Hammonds’ highlights on his Hudl page show an aggressive player who can win most one-on-one battles with offensive lineman and can use his speed to give any quarterback nightmares.

While Hammonds does appreciate the interest he’s receiving from WVU, he’s also still keeping his options open. But at the same time, he does classify West Virginia among his main group of school he’s communicating with the most. The Mountaineers, Indiana and Pitt are the other programs Hammonds pointed out.

In addition to that group of three, Akron, Kent State, Purdue, Western Michigan, Toledo and Miami (OH) have all offered Hammonds. Cincinnati and Kentucky have expressed interest in him as well. He’s even visited Ohio State.
