Report: Bob Huggins to Face Suspension, Amended Contract After Actions

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins is set to face a punishment of suspension and an amended contract status, as reported by Mike Casazza of 247 Sports.

Casazza reports that Huggins is expected to face a three-game suspension, making his return to the sidelines in the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Nov. 20. West Virginia University is expected to announce the punishments on Wednesday.

Huggins’ contract will be reduced by $1M and will also have to do sensitivity training.

Huggins made headlines on Monday when using an anti-gay slur twice towards Xavier fans on a Cincinnati radio show. The context was referring to the Crosstown Shootout, a rivalry between Cincinnati and Xavier. Huggins coached in that game from 1989-2005 with the Bearcats.

“It was the Crosstown Shootout,” Huggins said in a recording of the interview posted by Awful Announcing. “Yeah, no, what is was, was all those f–s. Those Catholic f–s, I think is what it was. They were envious they didn’t have one.”

Huggins quickly apologized with a statement, saying that he will accept any consequences for his actions. This preceded an initial statement soon after the news broke by the WVU athletic department.

Huggins, who has coached West Virginia for 16 seasons, has led the Mountaineers to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. Huggins coached WVU to their second Final Four appearance in school history back in 2010. Huggins is third all-time on the college basketball wins list with 934 victories. Huggins was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
