West Virginia has 10 scholarship players committed for the 2024-25 season, including plenty of guards. WVU’s staff isn’t quite done trying to add to the backcourt, reaching out to North Texas transfer guard John Buggs III.

Buggs has heard from Drake, East Carolina, ETSU, Memphis, Saint Louis, South Florida, St. John’s, Texas A&M, Tulane, Utah State, UTSA, West Virginia and others, he told The Portal Scoop.

Buggs (6-foot-3) averaged 7.3 points and 2.1 rebounds on 44% shooting from the field and 45% shooting from three. Buggs had nice performances against SMU, LSU and Florida Atlantic this past season. The Homer, La. native has also played at UMass, Hill College (TX) and UTSA during his collegiate career. Buggs has one year of eligibility remaining.

WVU has picked up seven transfers this offseason: Tucker DeVries (G – Drake), Sencire Harris (G – Illinois), Amani Hansberry (F – Illinois), Toby Okani (F – UIC), Eduardo Andre (C – Fresno State), Javon Small (G – Oklahoma State) and Joseph Yesufu (G – Washington State).

West Virginia has lost Josiah Harris (F), Seth Wilson (G), Patrick Suemnick (F), Kerr Kriisa (G), Jeremiah Bembry (G), Kobe Johnson (G), Ali Ragab (C) and Noah Farrakhan (G) to the transfer portal.

The transfer portal entry window closed on Wednesday, May 1, but players just need to be entered by then and can extend their recruitment as long as they want to.
