“Country Roads” can often be heard all over the world. And on Saturday, a version of the song synonymous with West Virginia was heard on a special day in Pittsburgh.

As Pirates rookie sensation Paul Skenes warmed up for his MLB debut, fans took notice of hearing “Country Roads” blasting inside PNC Park. However, it was not the typical song by John Denver. Instead, Morgantown, W.Va. native Charles Wesley Godwin’s edition was played.

Skenes pitched four inning, allowing three earned runs and giving up six hits against the Chicago Cubs. He also struck out seven batters. Despite leaving the game with the lead, the Cubs would rally to tie the score before a weather delay halted the action.

Since baseball players are often superstitious, it will now be interesting if the song stays as part of Skenes’ warmup music becomes the norm.

Regardless of Skenes, there’s a possibility of “Country Roads” as a walk-up music if the Pirates draft WVU baseball star and Western Pennsylvania product JJ Wetherholt.

Country Roads is truly international. Last night, I heard it played during an Australian football game and the fans were singing every word in the lyrics.
