WVU evened their series with the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, with superstar shortstop JJ Wetherholt slugging two home runs in the 7-2 win.

The big night at the plate put an exclamation point on what has already been an excellent week for the young star, as the National College Baseball Writers Association announced him as a semifnalist for the Dick Howser award, the most prestigious individual award in college baseball, on Thursday afternoon.

West Virginia leapt out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Wetherholt slugged a two-run homer the opposite way, marking the 200th hit of his illustrious career. First baseman Grant Hussey tacked on a two-run bomb of his own later in the frame, extending his hold on the Mountaineers’ career record for homers.

JJ Wetherholt doubled down the following inning, pulling another two-run homer over the wall in right-center to spot the Mountaineers a 6-0 lead.

Mountaineers’ starter Derek Clark allowed a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but that didn’t stop the veteran lefty from eating innings. Those were the only runs he surrendered across eight frames, striking out six batters on 116 pitches.

Second baseman Brodie Kresser led off the sixth inning with a homer of his own to cap off the scoring.

WVU Baseball moves to 32-20 on the season (18-11 Big 12). They’ll begin their regular season finale at 5 p.m. tomorrow before the Big 12 tournament kicks off in Arlington, Tex. on Tuesday, May 21. West Virginia currently occupies the No. 4 seed in the conference, and with at least 1.5 games of cushion above and below them in the standings, that’s unlikely to change ahead of the tournament.

For a related story, Wetherholt was named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.
