Former WVU Basketball forward James Okonkwo back in transfer portal

Even though West Virginia has found the program’s next head coach in Darian DeVries, the transfer portal is still open. To that end, WVU is far from the only school dealing with the madness of the portal being open in March. And it’s also important to know what’s going on around the country with other schools. There will be many moving parts this month with the coaching carousel and the transfer portal open. Let’s take a look at what’s going on around the country on Friday.

Update (11:08 AM) –

USC guard Bronny James (the son of NBA legend LeBron James) is declaring for the NBA Draft and entering the transfer portal simultaneously. James is doing this to keep his options open.

Update (9:30 AM) –

North Carolina forward James Okonkwo is entering the transfer portal, according to several reports like this one from 24/7 High School Hoops. Okonkwo had minimal production in just 15 games played last season for the Tar Heels. He played two seasons at WVU before transferring to North Carolina. This now puts a former Mountaineer back on the market as new head coach Darian DeVries continues to build his team for the 2024 season and beyond.

Okonkwo (6-foot-8) finished up his first full season at WVU in 2023, appearing in 31 games for the Mountaineers. Okonkwo averaged 2.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 11 minutes per game. Okonkwo received more playing time by Big 12 play after his breakout game against Texas Tech in Lubbock.

Okonkwo heard from LSU, Mississippi State, Nebraska, New Mexico State, North Carolina, Ohio, Saint Louis, Seton Hall, Texas A&M, UConn and VCU after entering the portal last year.
