Former West Virginia Star RB Considered Among Top Transfer Additions

While losing CJ Donaldson wasn’t a surprise to WVU fans, there’s now a possibility he could enjoy even more success after his West Virginia exit than he did as a Mountaineer. ESPN’s Max Olson even ranked Ohio State bringing in Donaldson as one of college football’s 100 best transfer additions.

“Donaldson was an under-the-radar get out of Miami for the Mountaineers and initially signed to play tight end, but he proved right away as a freshman that he can be an impact back. He rushed for 2,058 yards and scored 31 touchdowns over three seasons in Morgantown,” said Olson about Donaldson’s college career so far.

And as far as how he could fit with the Buckeyes as they look to defend their national title, Olson sees Donaldson as a great complementary back.

“Originally recruited as a tight end, CJ Donaldson converted to running back after arriving in Morgantown and burst onto the scene by rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries in the 2022 season-opener against Pitt. He finished with 526 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in seven games before his freshman season was cut short due to a leg injury,” Olson added.

Last season, Donaldson again battled injuries to rush for 798 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games. He formed a backfield tandem with freshman running back Jahiem White and quarterback Garrett Greene to help make WVU one of the top rushing teams in the country.

This year, Dondalson replicated his 2023 success by running for 734 yards and 11 more touchdowns. He also became more of a factor in the passing game, making 14 receptions for 104 yards and a score.

Obviously, the main obstacle for Donaldson will be earning enough playing time to have the opportunity to make a true impact, granted there’s now more room available on the Ohio State roster than would have existed a year ago.
