Garrett Greene is your quarterback, Mountaineer Nation. Greene took the field at Beaver Stadium to lead West Virginia against Penn State as the 2023 season is now underway.

Most expected Greene to eventually earn the job, but Brown wanted his more experienced player to truly win the job. On August 21, Brown said that he knew who his starting quarterback would be, but was not ready to make it public at that time.

Greene, who is entering his third season in Morgantown, replaced JT Daniels in the middle of last season and sparked the Mountaineers to a couple victories for program despite a tough season overall.

Brown made sure to note Greene winning the job doesn’t mean Nicco Marchiol didn’t impress his coaches as well. Marchiol, a top rated recruit in 2022, will serve as Greene’s backup after gaining some playing time at the end of last season.

For what may have separated Greene, throughout the offseason, Brown and other offensive coaches continuously brought up up that they were looking to see which quarterback would minimize mistakes. While Greene hasn’t been perfect, he has cut down on mistakes at practice and in a couple scrimmages in recent weeks. Prior to that, coaches mentioned Greene offered more of a big play potential but sometimes tries to do too much.

While Greene’s ability to use his legs has never been a question, he spent time at the Manning Passing Academy over the summer to try to perfect what he can do as a passer.

Greene is finally the guy and it will now be up to him to show what he can do during a full season. With that said, it will be interesting to see what kind of leash Brown has with him. During an appearance on a WVSN show, Brown admitted being open to potentially giving both quarterbacks some time under center throughout the season.

In a related story, one former Mountaineer is fully bought in and is driving the Garrett Greene hype train.
