WVU HC Neal Brown Open to Shared Role at Quarterback

Neal Brown on WVU Football QBs Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol

So much about the 2023 season for WVU hinges on the quarterback. Head coach Neal Brown won’t give any hints on who has the edge in the competition between Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol, but it may not be as simple as one starts and the other sits.

Brown was asked by WVSN’s Mike Asti if there’s a chance that they could end up sharing the role or at least the loser could see some playing time under center in games. His answer gave a bit more than he’s offered in the past on the subject.

He explained that he is not operating with a shared role in mind right now, but is not against giving whoever ends up as the backup a role as well. Brown even said this is a possibility early in the season too, not just if his team is out of contention or games are out of hand one way or the other like last year.

“Both of them competing, both of them pushing each other to get better. And there was no flinching that after the spring, cause again, we could have gone out and got a quarterback. The competition carries into the summer and it goes into fall camp. And it’s either going to be really clear, it could be a position where we play both. I’m not going into it closed minded, but that’s not necessarily what I’ve got in my head.”

One thing Brown is completely sure about is what kind of system will be in place for the Mountaineers. Brown reiterated that his team will run the same plays and try to operate the same way no matter who is under center. Offensive coordinator Chad Scott has also expressed a belief both quarterbacks can run this WVU offense.

He feels both quarterbacks can be ready to lead WVU in 2023 and both have a similar enough skillset to translate within the same system. As he’s said in the past, Brown is confident enough in both quarterbacks that he felt a competition between them would make more sense than bringing in another more experienced transfer.
