Grier named favorite to win Heisman by NFL.com

Earlier today, Chase Goodbread of NFL.com released his 18 for 18 article that listed the top 18 candidates to win the Heisman Trophy in 2018.

There you will find West Virginia senior quarterback, Will Grier. Grier, who is coming off a spectacular junior campaign is being regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the country by numerous media outlets.

As a junior, Grier tossed 34 touchdowns and 3,490 yards in only 10 games. He injured his finger during a game vs Texas in which he did not play a full quarter, which is why I only consider it being 10 games.

Although many have him as the top quarterback heading into 2018, some are skeptical about how he will bounce back from that injury. West Virginia head coach, Dana Holgorsen has said countless times that he has been spinning the ball really well and looks really sharp.

If history proves itself to be right, Grier should have astronomical numbers in 2018. During the Dana Holgorsen era, quarterbacks significantly improve from year one to year two in the Holgorsen system.

Geno Smith

Year 1- 4,385 yards 31 TD 7 INT 65.8%

Year 2- 4,205 yards 42 TD 6 INT 71.2%

Clint Trickett

Year 1- 1,605 yards 7 TD 7 INT 52.8%

Year 2- 3,285 yards 18 TD 10 INT 67.1%

Skyler Howard

Year 1- 3,145 yards 26 TD 14 INT 54.8%

Year 2- 3,328 yards 26 TD 10 INT 61.1%

Will Grier

Year 1- 3,490 yards 34 TD 12 INT 64.4%

Year 2- ???

The Mountaineers have had six players place in the Heisman Trophy voting, but have yet to have a winner.

Tavon Austin (2012-8th place), Major Harris (1988-5th place, 1989-3rd place), Jeff Hostetler (1983-7th place), Steve Slaton (2006-4th place), Pat White (2007-6th place, 2008-7th place), Amos Zereoue (1997-10th place).

Grier looks to be the 7th Mountaineer to finish in the Heisman voting, while also hunting for the schools first ever Heisman Trophy winner.
