While speaking to the media on Tuesday night, Illinois HC Brad Underwood confirmed that assistant Chester Frazier will be heading to West Virginia under Darian DeVries’ staff.

Frazier, who played at Illinois from 2005-09 under Bruce Weber, joined Underwood’s staff in 2021.

Here’s what Underwood told Illini Inquirer:

“We thank Chester for his undying loyalty, his dedication. Nobody bled orange and blue more than him. He’s a guy that has lived it. But I’m excited for him. He came here wanting to win championships because he didn’t as a player, and he came away with two. I’m excited his path as associate head coach is the next step. Excited it puts him back in a vicinity where his name recognition will really I think pay off for him in his desire to be a head coach. He was fantastic and wish him nothing but the best.”

Before coaching at Illinois, Frazier was on staff at Kansas State and Virginia Tech with Weber and Mike Young. Frazier has played a large part in recruiting, having ties within the DMV area. Frazier is a native of Baltimore, Md.

Since hiring DeVries, West Virginia has one assistant Nick Norton (Drake) and general manager Nelson Hernandez (Oklahoma State). Norton has been announced by the University while Hernandez is unofficially done.

There is more to this leaving than what is being said. You leave for a promotion not for a lateral move. And I am sure Illinois could match any increase.
