WVU DL Brenon Thrift Selected to Play in Spiral Tropical Bowl

Backup defensive lineman Brenon Thrift has been selected to play in the upcoming Sprial Tropical Bowl on Jan. 12 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Spiral Bowl is a post-season all-star game for college football seniors to play in front of NFL scouts and executives. It has been held annually since 2016.

Thrift played for the Mountaineers for two seasons after transferring to West Virginia. In 14 games played Thrift totaled four tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss.

Thrift originally committed to Temple after graduating from Gateway High School in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. After redshirting his freshman season Thrift transferred to Lackawanna College where he had three sacks. Thrift then went to Penn State where he did not play due to injury and was granted a medical redshirt.

Finally, Thrift transfer to WVU in 2017. He sat out in 2017 due to transfer requirements and played in 2018 and 2019.

This season Thrift provided depth for one of the best defensive lines in the Big 12. West Virginia finished third in the conference with 33 sacks, 23.5 of which came from defensive linemen. Linemen Darius and Dante Stills also tied for second in the Big 12 with Kansas State’s Wyatt Hubert with seven sacks each.

The Spiral Tropical Bowl will be played from Stetson University’s Spec Martin Stadium on Jan. 12. Kick-off is set for 10 a.m.
