West Virginia defensive recruiting coordinator Casey Smithson is leaving the program to reconnecting with former WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen at the University of Houston, according to a report by Mike Casazza of 247 Sports.

Smithson joins outside receivers coach Xavier Dye and special teams coordinator/inside linebackers coach Blake Seiler as assistants who have left WVU’s staff this offseason.

Smithson had been with the WVU football program since 2007. He started as a recruiting intern, served as the recruiting graduate assistant from 2011-14 and was elevated to his current position in 2014.

Nine defensive recruits signed with WVU during the early signing period last month. Among them were WV’s top recruit, defensive end Sean Martin and four-star cornerback David Vincent-Okoli.

Smithson’s departure makes three vacancies on WVU’s coaching staff that will need to be filled this offseason.
