As the clock struck midnight, West Virginia found themselves looking for a new coach entering the new year. Dana Holgorsen was in a stalemate with the WVU administration as he wanted an extension, but athletic director Shane Lyons was not in favor of giving him one.

Houston threw Holgorsen an offer he couldn’t refuse, a 5-year, $20 million deal that he ultimately accepted.

Many names have been thrown around as potential candidates to fill the vacancy left behind by Holgorsen, but one is seemingly the front-runner. That name? Troy’s Neal Brown.

According to our Troy source, “I’m getting phone calls from WVU media inquiring his personality, coaching philosophy, etc. what I’m hearing is coming from them, their connections within WVU about the level of certainty in hiring him. I know Brown has been vocal about staying and developing the culture and level of play at Troy, but we’ve always stayed realistic about our level within the FBS.” our source said.”

When we asked if there seems to be serious, mutual interest between the two sides they replied, “I can’t comment on Brown’s end, he’s a Kentucky man and it appears the southeast and Troy suits his family but at least on the Mountaineers end I would say they’re locked in.”

It appears that West Virginia has their eyes set on Brown, and the rumor of a 4-year, $11 million deal has not to be confirmed yet. I would imagine the process will pick up rather quickly if they believe he is the guy. There’s a really good chance an official announcement could come sometime before Friday if there interest is mutual.
