Sparrow Leaves WVU Football, Opts for Transfer Portal

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU Football is losing another player to the transfer portal. This time, it’s redshirt freshman running back A’Varius Sparrow.

Sparrow, who began this season far behind Leddie Brown and Tony Mathis Jr. in the running back depth chart, has been with the Mountaineers since he signed his letter of intent in January of 2020. Last season, he played in six games, recording 10 yards on three attempts. He also added depth on special teams. In 2021, he found time versus Long Island and Virginia Tech, even scoring a one-yard rushing touchdown against the Sharks.

His exit from the program, in search of greener pastures, isn’t a particular surprise, considered the frequency of head coach Neal Brown’s usage of Brown, and more recently, Mathis Jr. Six running backs remain in coach Chad Scott’s room, and Sparrow will have three seasons of eligibility left to use elsewhere.
