UAB’s Andy Kennedy Addresses WVU Rumor on Twitter

UAB head coach Andy Kennedy addressed the West Virginia rumor at around 1 a.m. on Thursday morning with a tweet. Kennedy has been linked to the WVU coaching search all week and some reports have jumped the gun on the hiring.

“Don’t be a [sheep]… #FakeNews #JustBlaze,” Kennedy wrote.

It’s unknown as of early Thursday morning if Kennedy is shutting down the rumors that he was hired or if he’s shutting down the rumors linking to the job all together.

Kennedy served as the interim coach at Cincinnati after Huggins stepped down back in 2005 for the same situation. Kennedy went on to coach the Bearcats for one year before heading to Ole Miss until 2018. The 55-year-old went back to his alma mater at UAB, where he’s taking the Blazers to the NCAA Tournament in 2022. UAB won 29 games this past season as well.

Sources told WV Sports Now that the current West Virginia roster is in favor of Kennedy. Some of the players have not received many updates and have been scrolling through Twitter for the most recent news, which isn’t uncommon in these situations.

If Kennedy is officially out of the picture, other names to keep an eye on are Pat Kelsey (College of Charleston), Ben McCollum (Northwest Missouri State), Jerrod Calhoun (Youngstown State), John Beilein or an internal hire. It was reported on Wednesday that FAU head coach Dusty May has not been in contact with West Virginia.

WV Sports Now will provide you the latest on WVU’s coaching search.
