A game most expected to be high scoring opened with WVU and Texas Tech trading field goals. And while West Virginia would’ve preferred a touchdown on their second possession, the Mountaineers’ first points of the day were thanks to a big career achievement by kicker Michael Hayes.

Hayes drilled a 52-yard field goal to put three points on the board. The kick was the longest for Hayes of his college career, occurring in his final regular season game. At that time, his kick tied the game at 3-3.
