Texas Tech Embarrasses WVU as Mountaineers Finish Disappointing Regular Season 6-6
West Virginia wrapped up the roller coaster ride that’s been the 2024 regular season in Lubbock, Texas with one of their worst performances of the season. A game that made WVU fans wish the year would just hurry up an end resulted in a 52-15 loss to Texas Tech.
A game in which most expected points to a be at a premium, and eventually was from one sideline, opened with WVU and Texas Tech trading field goals.
In an ironic twist for a game between two high-powered offenses, it took some time before this game truly got going. WVU turned the ball over on downs after a couple nine-yard gains, one on a pass and the other from a run by CJ Donaldson, opened the possession with some promise. Hudson Clement dropped an errant throw from Greene on the fourth down attempt to hand the ball over to the Red Raiders.
But despite also enjoying early success on their first drive, Texas Tech had to settle for a field goal. What looked to be a highlight reel worthy touchdown catch ended up being called incomplete.
The WVU offense was back in business on their attempt to answer, but the Texas Tech defense brought too much pressure for Greene to handle. But Michael Hayes to the rescue. Hayes drilled a new career-long 52-yard field goal to tie the game.
A few minutes later and the first quarter ended with both teams still waiting for this game to fully explode.
Unfortunately for WVU, it was Texas Tech who broke the touchdown seal. The Red Raiders scored their first touchdown thanks to their all-time rushing leader Tahj Brooks. With 10:32 left in the half, Texas Tech now held a two-score edge, 13-3.
Texas Tech would then find the end zone again before halftime, operating with ease and taking. 17-point lead to the locker room. Jalin Conyers, who dropped a touchdown catch before Brooks ran it in earlier, set up the Red Raiders score with an 18-yard reception off a ball tipped back to him while competing against WVU safety Anthony Wilson.
Disaster then struck for the Mountaineers throughout the rest of the afternoon.
First, Greene threw an interception into traffic on a deep pass attempt to Clement. Texas Tech then added another touchdown, the second on the ground for Brooks. A two-point conversion made the score 28-3.
Next, Greene fumbled as he dropped back for a pass and handed the ball right back to the Red Raiders. They answered with one more touchdown as Brooks punched in one more to further push the game out of reach at 35-3 with one more half left in the game and regular season.
The embarrassment for WVU carried over into the second as Morton threw his second touchdown pass of the day, increasing the Red Reader leader to 42-3 with an entire quarter and a half still to go.
Providing a sliver of hope to stop the bleeding, Wilson picked off Morton and derailed the Red Raiders from tacking on any more points. West Virginia did put their first touchdown on the board, granted failed to convert the two-point try and could only move the score to 42-9. A Texas Tech field goal made it 45-9.
Jahiem White showed his skills, running the ball in for another Mountaineer touchdown. White became a rare bright spot of an otherwise miserable day with well over 100 yards, totaling 124 on 14 carries.
Despite the score and increase in effort, the game continued to be out of reach, reading 45-15 in favor of the home team in the late fourth quarter.
Texas Tech officially put WVU’s regular season to rest with a 52-15 domination.
A season that kicked off with so much hype finished even more disappointing than WVU’s 6-6 record truly shows. And even though the Mountaineers do have a bowl game left to play in 2024, the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Mountaineers will undoubtedly continue as long as Neal Brown remains the head coach.

ONE of the worst?!? Really, please tell me of another that was anywhere near that awful…and against an unranked team, yet. I could not have imagined a debacle like this… *sigh*

Remember that Brown and his coaching staff are division 2 coaches, all games where the opponents have division 1 coaches results in WVU automatically spotting the opposition 10 points before the game begins!
