Jesse Edwards, WVU’s big man, has been sidelined for over two weeks after suffering a fractured right wrist vs. UMass. Edwards had successful surgery on Dec. 20 and his timetable to return at the time was about four weeks.

WVU interim HC Josh Eilert believes that Edwards will have his cast taken off on Thursday, a step in the right direction for his return.

“I believe today they’re taking that cast off, from what my understanding is. Then they’ll have to do some imaging here in the coming weeks to figure out how well it healed. So don’t know anything more than that,” Eilert said. “Not sure where it’s going to land. Hopefully, everything is smooth sailing and we can have him back here in a couple of weeks.”

Edwards has been a top contributor for West Virginia so far this season during his final year of college basketball. Edwards is averaging 14.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks through 10 games.

For now, WVU has 6-foot-9 forward Akok Akok playing the five during Edwards’ absence. Akok is trying to get his conditioning up after dealing with a medical issue in late October that sidelined him for about six weeks. Eilert’s team currently sits at 5-8 with a couple of bad home losses but is looking forward to having his full roster out on the floor once Edwards returns.

“Knowing in three weeks we got Jesse Edwards coming back and we’ll actually have a five-man. We could be playing our best basketball in February and March so let’s continue to have that growth mindset and continue to figure out how we get better each and every day,” Eilert said last week.

West Virginia will travel to No. 3 Houston on Saturday to open up Big 12 play.
