The WVU women picked up their first loss of the season on Sunday and dropped in the AP Top 25 Poll on Monday.

The Mountaineers (8-1) lost 78-73 to No. 4 Texas in the Gulf Coast Showcase championship game in Estero, Fla. on Sunday, their first setback of the season. In the Ap Top 25 Poll released Monday morning, the team fell three spots from No. 12 to No. 15.

The WVU women overall had a good week at the Gulf Coast Showcase, dominating High Point and Boise State in the first two games in Florida.

On Friday, the Mountaineers defeated High Point 89-54. JJ Quinerly led the way, scoring 22 points. But it wasnโ€™t just about Quinerly, as three different Mountaineers surpassed double-digits in points. Jordan Thomas earned a double-double, producing 18 points off the bench while also crashing the glass for 10 rebounds. Jordan Harrison scored 13ย of her own.

On Saturday, WVU faced off against then-unbeaten Boise State and demolished the Broncos, 82-47.ย Junior guard Sydney Shaw hit the 20-point benchmark on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Quinerly continued her climb up the Mountaineersโ€™ all-time scoring list, moving into the No. 14 spot all-time and clearing the 1,500-point benchmark.

Sunday was the ranked matchup between the Mountaineers and Longhorns. The Mountaineers gave Texas a run for their money, trimming the deficit to a single point off a Shaw corner three with 43 seconds to play, but they never managed to tie it, much less take the lead.

Although the Mountaineers outshot the Longhorns 54.2 percent to 43.1, they were outrebounded 37-23โ€”much of that because of 18 offensive boards for Texasโ€”and lost the turnover battle 20-15, ultimately taking 10 less shots than Texas didโ€ฆ although West Virginia actually made more baskets, 26 to 25.

WVU hosts East Tennessee State in the WVU Coliseum for its Education Day game on Friday at 10:30 p.m.
