WVU Women Dominate Undefeated Boise State
The WVU women continued their unbeaten run to start the season on Saturday, taking down another undefeated team, the Boise State Broncos, 82-47 at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.
Although the Broncos entered the game at 7-0, they didn’t receive any votes in either the AP Poll or the Coaches Poll this past week. The No. 12 ranked Mountaineers relied on their defense as they have throughout head coach Mark Kellogg’s tenure, limiting the Broncos’ percentage of shots made to a paltry 31.4 percent. West Virginia forced 23 Boise State turnovers, allowing it to take 16 more shots than the Broncos did, and scoring 27 points off those mistakes.
Junior guard Sydney Shaw hit the 20-point benchmark on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. JJ Quinerly continued her climb up the Mountaineers’ all-time scoring list, moving into the No. 14 spot all-time and clearing the 1,500-point benchmark.
Boise State managed just two buckets in the first period, a pair of three-pointers more than five minutes apart, allowing West Virginia to build a comfortable 22-6 lead. The Broncos found their shooting stroke in the second frame, playing to a much closer 23-17 margin, but that still allowed the Mountaineers to expand on their lead.
West Virginia’s defense slammed the door shut following the half, once again allowing just two shots, both layups. Their staunch defensive play continued in the fourth quarter until the game was well out of hand, with a Zya Nugent layup pushing the score to 78-39, their largest lead of the night, with less than four minutes to play.
The WVU women defeated High Point in their first game in Florida, 89-54 on Friday.
WVU Women’s Basketball improves to 8-0 on the season. They’ll conclude the Gulf Coast Showcase at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, taking on the winner of the bottom portion of the bracket in the championship game.
