WVU Women’s Basketball Picks Up Quad 1 Win Over Texas A&M
WVU Women’s Basketball boosted their résumé with a Quadrant 1 win over Texas A&M on Sunday, Dec. 14, dominating the Aggies 63-45 on the road. The Mountaineers (10-2) allowed just 15 shots on the day, forcing 24 turnovers and holding Texas A&M to a shooting percentage of 34.1.
The Aggies held the No. 69 spot in the NET rankings when the game began: the cutoff for Quad 1 road wins is 75th place, so the Mountaineers have some cushion to preserve their first win in the category this season.
Kierra Wheeler led West Virginia in scoring with a 16 point, 10 rebound double-double and added five steals. Turnovers also plagued the Mountaineers, who committed 20, but they won the rebounding battle 39-29 and sank eight of 19 threes, helping them make up the deficit. Jordan Harrison and Gia Cooke (13 points apiece) also finished in double figures, as did Sydney Shaw (11 points). The Mountaineers received just six points from their bench, all of them coming from Sydney Woodley.
After playing to a 14-14 tie in the first period as both teams combined for 15 turnovers, West Virginia took control of the game in the second, holding the Aggies to a 2-of-12 clip and reeling off a 17-2 run that pushed their lead to double digits.
The Mountaineers forced seven more turnovers in the fourth quarter to close the Aggies out, holding them to just nine points and keeping them off the board for close to three minutes on two separate occasions.
Up next, WVU Women’s Basketball will host Houston in their Big 12 opener, set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21.
