WVU Women’s Basketball Demolishes Georgia Tech
WVU Women’s Basketball won their third consecutive game on Thursday, Dec. 11, blowing out the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 82-50 at the Hope Coliseum. The win marks the Mountaineers’ (9-2) first over an opponent from a major conference since Nov. 14, when they took down Duke with an empty bench.
West Virginia got back to their winning formula, forcing 28 turnovers and holding the Yellow Jackets to a 17-of-50 clip from the field. The Mountaineers committed just 12 turnovers themselves, cleaning up a recent point of concern, and began on a red hot streak, forcing two turnovers in the first 90 seconds to take a 6-0 lead, finding the basket on each of their first three possessions.
From there, West Virginia’s offense ran cold: they made just seven of 33 shots on their way into the half, their 27-19 lead giving the Yellow Jackets a fighting chance.
The Mountaineers began to pour it on in the second half, largely because of improved accuracy from three; they made 1 of 15 triples in the first half and 8 of 18 out of the break. Gia Cooke (23 points), Sydney Shaw (18 points) and Jordan Harrison and Kierra Wheeler (16 points apiece) all finished in double digits; Wheeler picked up 11 rebounds for a double-double.
A pair of 9-0 runs in the third quarter helped West Virginia pad their lead before the floodgates opened in the fourth quarter. D’Asia Thomas-Harris, who led Georgia Tech in scoring on the night, fouled out with 5:26 to play and the team managed just one basket in her absence, allowing the Mountaineers to close the game on a 12-2 run.
Up next, WVU Women’s Basketball will travel to Texas A&M. They’ll take on the Aggies at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.
