WVU baseball moves to 2-0 in the 2023 Backyard Brawl by dominating Pitt in Morgantown. The Mountaineers won their ninth straight game on Wednesday night, tying their longest win streak of the season.

The 10-0 victory over the Panthers was thanks to another power display for Randy Mazey’s team, and one that never cooled off once it going going.

Pitcher Carson Estridge opened up the game sending Panther after Panther packing with strikeouts. Landon Wallace was able to take advantage of some aggressive base running by JJ Wetherholt and get him home off an easy single. This put WVU up 1-0, a lead they would never relinquish.

WVU followed more strikeouts from Estridge with more runs over the next several innings. Caleb McNeely joined the double-digit home club with a solo shot, Wallace picked up another RBI and Braden Barry also helped get another run on the board.

It was 4-0 in favor of the Mountaineers in the fourth inning. That was until Wetherholt happened. The Western Pennsylvania native, who had to sit out the prior Brawl game at PNC Park, made his presence felt with a monster three-run homer. This gave West Virginia a much more comfortable 7-0 lead.

WVU fans could just sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the game without worry, one that eventually ended with a mercy rule win for the home team. Add a third RBI from Wallace and Barry with a dinger of his own and it was the time for the music to play at Monongalia County Ballpark.

West Virginia now owns a 34-11 overall record, looking to climb the NCAA rankings even more. WVU started off the week jumping all the way up as the number 12 team in the country.

The Mountaineers will now have one day off before getting back into conference play on Friday to open up a three-game series with Oklahoma. First pitch between WVU and the Sooners is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

Pitt will be waiting in Pittsburgh on May 10 in a game that could give WVU a season sweep of their arch rival up north with a win.
