Asti: WVU LB Reid Carrico Will Help Elevate Pass Rush, Teammates

Reid Carrico

The Mountaineers secured a big transfer addition in highly coveted linebacker Reid Carrico. But now that he’s locked in with WVU, why is there so much hype surrounding the former Ohio State Buckeye?

For starters, Carrico fills a direct need. Due to injuries, most notably to Trey Lathan, West Virginia was forced to elevate freshman Ben Cutter into a primary role at mic linebacker. Defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley even mentioned how he was factoring in the fact Cutter was in an unreasonable situation for a young player when elevating him. And while Cutter was mostly fine in the role, he needs help.

Veteran Lee Kpogba being out of eligibility will also create a big void, both on and off the field, among the linebackers. That’s where Carrico can fit in. The rest of the room, especially Cutter and a healthy Lathan, will be able to watch Carrico and follow his example. He’s also hungry to make an impact.

LB Reid Carrico Officially Signs with WVU Football to Complete Transfer from Ohio State

Carrico decided to transfer due to being buried on the Buckeye’s depth chart. But despite his struggles to get on the field at Ohio State, Carrico has tons of talent. He was a consensus four-star recruit out of high school, compiling offers from the likes of Alabama, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee and many others.

Carrico can excel in zone coverage and uses his elite acceleration and closing speed to cause problems for any quarterback. Joining the Mountaineers could be just the opportunity for Carrico to show his true ability and do so in a major conference.

If nothing else, Carrico now provides some necessary depth at a position lacking reliable bodies.

West Virginia absolutely had to find linebacker help that could be plugged in right away, and Carrico checks that box off perfectly.
