Mountaineers in the Pros
Geno Smith, Raiders Gamble Away His Best Performance of Season
Geno Smith and the Raiders came to just short in his best performance of the season, losing on a gamble in the second overtime.
After struggling most of the year in his debut season with Las Vegas, Smith threw four touchdowns, including one in the final seconds of the second overtime, before falling to the Jaguars.

Leading the Raiders on a comeback until failing on a two-point conversion attempt to win the game, Smith completed 74.4% of his passes for 284 yards.
Both teams traded field goals until a fourth quarter explosion that forced to overtime. Then, following a Jacksonville touchdown, Smith led his team into the end zone as well.
The Raiders decided to go for the win instead of kicking the extra point to take the tie. Smithโs pass was batted down, resulting in a 30-29 loss.
Despite the loss – Las Vegas is now 2-6, Smith threw for multiple touchdowns in a game for the first time since Sept. 28 and just the third time all season.
Before being drafted in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Jets, Smith racked up 11,662 passing yards and 98 touchdowns across three years as the starting quarterback for WVU, including 42 passing touchdowns to just six interceptions during his senior year. He finished his career near the top of most statistical passing categories for the program, leading the Mountaineers to a trio of bowl games and an Orange Bowl win.
A 2013 second round pick of the Jets, Smith washed out of New York after two seasons as the starter, playing sparsely until 2022 when he earned the NFLโs Comeback Player of the Year Award. From there, he enjoyed a career renaissance with the Seahawks until being traded to the Raiders.
