WVU Wrestlers Strickenberger, Hall Win Big 12 Championship Titles

WVU Wrestling’s Jett Strickenberger and Peyton Hall both won their first Big 12 Championship titles during the annual tournament Sunday evening at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The pair became the fifth and sixth Mountaineers to stand atop the Big 12 podium.
Strickenberger won the 125-pound title with a 5-2 overtime victory over Oklahoma State’s Troy Spratley, the second time Strickenberger has defeated the Oklahoma State wrestler this season.
“Mountaineer Nation,” Strickenberger said in a video posted to the WVU Wrestling account on X. “Big 12 champ. Bringing home some hardware. This time, in bracket form.”

The third-seeded Strickenberger and fourth-seed Spratley battled through a scoreless first period, and were without a point until Strickenberger scored a reversal with 14 seconds left in the second frame to lead 2-0.
Spratley recorded a pair of points in the third period to send the bout to overtime tied at 2-2. Following a scramble, Strickenberger scored a takedown near the out of bounds line to claim the championship.
Hall defeated Missouri’s Cam Steed 2-0 to win the 165-pound crown, which was Hall’s second victory over Steed in less than two months.

The two-time All-American and Steed were also scoreless through one period. Hall tallied an escape during the second frame to lead 1-0 through two.
While clinging to the slim lead, Hall rode out Steed for the duration of the third period, adding a riding time point to set the final.
Strickenberger and Hall will look to garner more hardware as they represent WVU wrestling in the NCAA Championships on March 20 and 21 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. This will be Hall’s fifth and final time competing.
