JUCO defensive lineman Nijel McGriff commits to WVU

On paper the defensive line should be one of West Virginia’s strengths next season, and late Monday that group got even deeper.

Junior college defensive lineman Nijel McGriff committed to the Mountaineers on Monday evening, picking WVU over scholarship offers from Florida State and Mississippi, among others.

McGriff, listed at 6-foot-2 and 285 pounds, had 27 tackles and two sacks last season in 11 games with Northwest Mississippi Community College. With his commitment, McGriff becomes the fourth defensive lineman to join WVU’s 2021 recruiting class along with Hammond Russell, Edward Vesterinen and Brayden Dudley. As a high schooler in Jacksonville, Florida, McGriff also helped lead Mandarin High to a Class 8A state championship as a senior in 2018.
