Key Freshman Matt Sieg Stands as Wild Card for 2026 | WVU Football All 105

All 105 is a West Virginia Sports Now series profiling each member of the 2026 WVU Football Roster.

As a feather in the cap of Rich Rodriguez and his staff, Matt Sieg flipped from Penn State to West Virginia on the December National Signing Day. Sieg’s flip surprised many recruiting experts nationally, but added an accomplished athlete to WVU’s important 2026 class.

Fully expected to be a key member of the group that turns the WVU program around, Sieg, who moved south to Morgantown as a four-star recruit and owner of numerous WPIAL records, will play safety, and MAYBE float over to the offense as well. Rodriguez initially vocalized being open to using Sieg on both sides of the ball, but has expressed more recent hesitation as well.

Last Year: Played quarterback and free safety at Fort Cherry High School in Western Pennsylvania’s WPIAL. 

Stats: Statistically speaking, Sieg’s high school career was historic. During his junior season, became one of only two players (Terrelle Pryor) in their WPIAL careers to produce 4,000 rushing and 4,000 passing yards. He was also the first player in WPIAL history to register 5,000 yards rushing and 3,000 yards passing for his career, first player in WPIAL history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in three-straight years. Sieg finished his high school career with a 49-7 record, two WPIAL championships (2024, 2023) and set WPIAL records in total offense (12,592) and touchdowns (139 rushing, punt returns, interception return only).

Post-Camp Outlook: Sieg impressed his coaches in the spring, showing signs of being ready for college football right away. 

Projected Role: Sieg is going to earn a legitimate opportunity to make an impact as a true freshman, maybe even spanning to the offensive side of the ball as well. But to be clear, Sieg will be primarily used on defense with a ceiling as an important part of the WVU secondary.

Accolades, Highlights: Sieg’s high school accolades include being the Maxwell Football Club’s National High School Player of the Year, Navy All-American Bowl National Player of the Year, High School All-American First Team selection by the Maxwell Football Club and one of the most productive and talented national prospects in the 2026 class.
